Supporting Animals In Need

Volunteering at my local animal shelter is how I discovered dog photography, but it also gave me a valuable insight into the world of rescue. Dogs often end up in shelters through no fault of their own, largely down to a lack of understanding or education, but also due to neglect and abuse. I’m a firm believer in promoting ethical rescues, highlighting both the benefits of adoption and the importance of animal welfare. With this in mind, you’ll never find me far from the causes that inspire me and helped me to become the person and photographer that I am today.

Animals In Need is a Northamptonshire based charity dedicated to the rescue, rehabiliation and rehoming (or release) of both wild and domesticated animals. Founded in 1990, their incredible team of volunteers are passionate about animal welfare and rescue, and work around the clock to care for every animal that comes through their doors. Find out more about the amazing work they do, and how you can support them.

Being able to give back to my community is a huge privilege, and an experience that has probably had more impact on my photography than anything else. Without the opportunity to work with the dogs and the amazing team at Animals In Need Northamptonshire, I may never have discovered the freedom and creativity that pushed me to create The Artisan Hound.

The work I do behind the camera can never be compared to the endless dedication and hard work that the volunteers at the sanctuary put in day after day. Their unwavering commitment to helping animals continues to fill me with hope. I owe so much to those incredible volunteers who welcomed me into their world.

But if my photos can cause just one person to stop scrolling on their newsfeed, to pause and take notice, to find out more about the sanctuary and the dogs in desperate need of homes, or even just share a Facebook post, then it makes it all worthwhile.

Photos can make or break a dog’s adoption profile (check out my journal entry: Can a photo save a life?) so having a professional photo drastically increases a dog’s chance of being noticed by potential adopters. I organise photo shoots for the dogs at Animals in Need, using my experience in canine behaviour to spot their stress signals and create a calm environment, showing them in their best light.

Animals in Need hold regular Fun Dog Shows in and around Northampton to raise vital funds for the charity. You’ll often find me at these events in the middle of the action, taking photos of all the dogs as they strut their stuff in the ring! These photos are free for visitors to download and share, promoting the charity and spreading the word about the events that they organise, and the work that they do.

charity dog photography calendar

As well as volunteering my time, I also raise funds for Animals in Need by creating an annual charity calendar, featuring dogs that have been previously adopted from Animals in Need. The calendar is hugely popular, not only because 100% of proceeds go to the charity, but because it highlights the happy hounds that have found their forever homes through the hard work of everyone at AIN.
