THE HEART BEHIND THE HOUND

Josie Baughan Northamptonshire dog photographer

So you probably already know a little bit about my photography – but what about me? The girl behind the lens?

I’ve thrown together a few (hopefully) fun facts that shed a bit of light on what I’m all about (when I’m not rolling about in the mud with a camera, or squirrelled away at my computer with a mug of tea in hand).

Some of them may well surprise you!

THE FIRST THING YOU’LL NOTICE ABOUT ME?

It’s usually the hair. If you’re about to tell me that you’d love to have curly hair, think again. Trust me, nearly 30 years of hairdressing mishaps, endless bottles of conditioner, and humidity have taught me that curly hair is not for the faint-hearted! It’s been a long-fought battle, but I’ve finally brought it to heel. It still has its moments of madness, but honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

And yes, you can touch it if you want.

I DON’T HAVE A DOG

In fact, I don’t have any pets! I know right? Not even a goldfish? What kind of dog photographer are you? Probably the only one on the planet who doesn’t have a pet of their own!

The thing is, I currently live in an apartment, so pets are a bit of a no-no for now. But that doesn’t stop me spending as much of my time as possible surrounded by animals of all shapes and sizes – from volunteering at my local shelter, to taking part in various animal-oriented training courses, and of course spending time with my wonderful clients.

And don’t worry, I don’t plan to be pet-less for long – I fully intend to have a furry family of my own one day!

I ORIGINALLY WANTED TO BE A VET NURSE

Actually, I originally wanted to be a comic book artist. Then an Animator. And then an Illustrator. But that didn’t pan out so well (don’t you love it when life has other plans?).

When I left school I spent several years volunteering with my local vet and animal shelter to further my experience in the animal care industry, in the hopes of one day becoming a vet nurse. Sadly (or maybe fortunately?) my life took a turn in another direction and I had to abandon that venture, but my passion for animals was well and truly here to stay.

I’M A MAJOR MOVIE BUFF

Indie, Sci-Fi, Western, Drama, Disney – give me all the movies! In fact, if you don’t find me editing photos or taking a nap, you’ll definitely find me at the cinema.

Whether it’s the latest Marvel movie, or a niche foreign film, I’m there – popcorn in hand. For me, Cinema has to be one of the ultimate art forms – full of endless artistic and storytelling opportunities. Of course, I’ll also happily indulge in a chick flick or rom com every now and again 😉

APPARENTLY I LOVE TO TRAVEL!

I say that because it was never something I really cared about or gave that much thought when I was younger. Growing up, a lot of my peers wanted to see the world and travel to faraway places. I just wanted to stay at home in my familiar, comfy surroundings!

It wasn’t until I embarked on an incredible photography workshop to Spain in 2016 that I finally got bitten by the travel bug. Since then, I’ve taken my camera to Costa Rica, Mexico, and several US States for various client sessions, workshops, and charitable efforts. I don’t plan to stop any time soon!

FOOD IS LIFE

While I can’t profess to being a true ‘foodie’, it’s safe to say that I’m a culinary enthusiast! Pizza, tacos, curry, roast dinners – you name it, I’ll probably eat it (although my favourites definitely have to be Italian and Mexican). In fact, I have been known to take the occasional food bribe – just don’t even think about offering me peas – yuck!

MY FAVOURITE COLOUR IS GREEN

Just thought I’d throw that in there.
